My M.Sc Environmental Science Project
I did my M.Sc Environmental Science project on Organic Substrates and Verticla Farming domains of interdisciplinary science which included botany, agriculture, chemistry, biology, environment, gardening subjects combined.
I has carried out entire project in our bungalow terrace, between terrace garden plants, and moderate climatic conditions. Special thanks to my mother, who helped me in completing this project successfully. Also my M.Sc project guide Sayali maam to guide and support me during project.
I took four substrates, one of flower waste, one of used tea powder, another of vegetable wastes, and other cocopeat brick substrate. Cocopeat I purchased from a local nursery, while others I had prepared myself at home by simple composting method and process.
I bought a polythene Pipe from hardware, made big holes in it vertically, inserted half cut bottles in them, and placed all organic substrates in bottles one below the other in vertical setup. Before that I sowed market bought spinach seeds in those substrates for showing vertical farming concept.
Then I exposed this structure with shade and light, frequent watering and fresh air supplying. After one week or two, small green plant heads were visible, mostly in flower waste substrate, followed by cocopeat substrate and then into vegetable waste and lastly very less or no growth in tea powder substrate.
Then I took samples of all four substrates into lab paper and did chemical analysis of the organic soils to know biological and chemical reasons behind the result seen by naked eyes. After lab analysis I got to know the result reasons based upon biology and chemistry analysis testings.
Separate bar graphs and numerical tables were plotted and shown in final project thesis and journal regarding the performance of the substrates and results. Minimum 30 research papers were referred to and read during the project course. Project specific chemicals and powders were prepared by me for lab analysis of the project substrates.Lastly a botanical reason came out that due to welting flower cycle and decomposition of flowers in soils, the flower substrate showed first and more spinach growth in it compared to other organic waste substrates and soils.
